Fire and Ice: Big Freeze at Chicago Warehouse Blaze

This is the incredible scene in the aftermath of a huge warehouse fire in Chicago after sub-zero temperatures turned water into ice. An Arctic blast had sent temperatures tumbling in the past few days, making it feel like -46C in some areas with the wind chill factor added to the mix. The blaze was one of the biggest the city's fire service has ever had to face and the cold made things even more difficult as icicles formed on fire hoses and froze the firefighters' uniforms.

The Do's and Don'ts of Weight Loss

When embarking on weight loss then do...

  • Eat regularly
    Re-fuelling when you are hungry is a good idea, but make sure that you snack on the right things. Good snacks are fruit, vegetable sticks and low fat dips, scones (watch the butter), sandwiches, toast, smoothies and low fat or diet yogurt.
  • Take a walk at lunchtime
    Just small changes make a big difference over time. Offer to make the coffee at work or wash up, just walking over to the kettle every day for a few weeks counts! Or could even exercise at your desk.
  • Go shopping with a list
    There is nothing worse than standing in the chocolate aisle with a growling stomach, it makes it all the more tempting to grab foods that are high in fat and sugar. Make sure you do your food shopping with a list — and not when you are hungry too.
  • Don’t be conned by marketing
    Low fat does not necessarily mean low calorie; many manufacturers lower the amount of fat in dessert foods and increase the amount of sugar to compensate. Make sure you read the labels on food stuffs so you know exactly what you are eating.
  • Get support
    This is really important if you are to succeed at losing weight in the long-term. Being surrounded by people who will eat the same foods and encourage you along the way is a good idea. Find a ‘buddy’ or someone in your family to boost your morale. This can really help if you are taking up a new exercise regime; it makes backing out much harder to do!
  • Watch your portion sizes
    Next time you go out, look at the amounts that your friends eat; you may be surprised at how much you consume in comparison to others. It is important to get your meal portions correct so try to eat more fruit, vegetables and starchy foods and less of the protein, dairy products and fatty and sugary foods.
  • Set yourself achievable goals
    This is important as you have something to aim for and if you make it achievable then you feel good when you reach the goal, rewarding yourself perhaps with a nice hot bath or a night out to the movies.
  • Tackle problems and don’t rely on food as a comfort
    A large number of us use food as a way of relieving stress and as a way to unwind when we are not even hungry.
  • Remember that there are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ foods, only ‘good’ or ‘bad’ diets
    This means that you can have treats; it is really important to be able to have what we call ‘flexible restraint’ and pick and choose when you have foods such as chocolate and chips.  
  • Do monitor your food intake and physical activity
    Using a diary or blog to record what you eat and how much you exercise is an excellent start. This helps you to understand where are your ‘danger periods’ on a daily basis, such as in the evenings when you relax in front of the TV. Once you have found out when you are most likely to waver it is easier to find ways to help yourself e.g. going for a walk instead of watching TV or having a bath, reading a book etc.

  • Don’t rely on just changing your food intake to lose weight
    Research has proven that a combination of both exercise and altered eating habits is the best way to lose and maintain weight loss.
  • Think a fad diet will be the answer to your weight issue
    This is a sure-fire way to head for the junk food. Many fad diets promise great weight loss but are unbalanced, and only make you crave the foods that it advises against. Life is for living and we should try to have a sensible and realistic approach to weight loss!
  • Don't miss breakfast!
    A classic way to think you are cutting back is to miss the most important meal of the day. By missing breakfast you are more likely to go for a snack mid-morning and it may not always be a healthy one you reach for!
  • Don’t become obsessive about your food intake
    If you feel you are permanently on a diet, ask yourself why. There is no point going out for a meal and feeling deprived, think of coping strategies to make such occasions as enjoyable as they should be. Why not cut back the day before you go out for that meal or even the day after? (Source News)

Claire Nasir’s Motivating Plan to Lose Weight and Keep it Of



TV presenter Clair Nasir admits that it was that unflattering picture of herself working out in a neon bikini that was the kick she needed to lose seven and a half stone in 2010.

 Claire talked us through her diet plan that keeps her trimWe caught up with her to find out how she keeps herself motivated and juggles a healthy diet with a growing family and busy work schedule.

“Losing weight is one thing,” she tells us, “but maintaining it is hard. It’s so easy to have a slip up at any time that can really throw you off.

“The way I deal with it is to think ‘I will start today and I will live every day as if it’s the first day’. When I lost all that weight I started afresh every day."

“Then if you have a slip up one day you don’t have to think you’ve ruined the whole plan and have to wait for next week, next month or even next January to resolve to start again.”

It’s easy to tell how focussed Claire is and it’s becomes clear that healthy eating has become integral to her life. We ask her to talk us through her daily diet.

“I start with porridge and fruit – breakfast is the most important part of the day and this really sets you up for your day ahead. It’s important to enjoy it. 

“I mix natural yoghurt with lots of raw porridge oats, berries and whatever’s in season – it smells good, tastes amazing and you know it’s all really good for you.”

Lunch

“Lean fish is an ideal focal point of the meal, like salmon or oily fish like mackerel. Then I pile up my plate with loads and loads of vegetables and salad.

“Opt for things you like the taste of. I really love cucumber and tomatoes, peppers or maybe a light spinach – and I make sure it’s a really generous portion size that will go a long way to filling me up with the good stuff.

“I add seeds to the top for nutrients and good fats. On the side, I’d have cous cous or quinoa for slow release carbs for energy all afternoon.”

“In the evening, I might have a steak with roasted veg, or a chicken stir fry with broccoli, maybe basmati rice if you need the carbs. My rule is only lean protein but something like a steak is so nice you don’t feel you’re depriving yourself.

“I steer clear of potatoes, bread and starchy carbs entirely.”

Extras and snacks

I always drink six pints of water through the day, and eating like this means you’re never actually hungry. This was the diet I did leading up to the weight loss for my DVD. Plus no alcohol at all, lots of green tea and I’d have an Americano rather than a Latte.

“When it comes to snacks, I’d avoid fruit as it’s full of sugar. I only have that first thing in the morning.  If I start waning before lunchtime, I make sure I always have snacks with me or I have a coffee and that’s a really good way to curb your  appetite.

“Good snacks are carrots or cucumber crudités, load up on veggies and you won’t have time to feel hungry.”

 Drink water to beat cellulite ©Rex“In the afternoon, I get a real craving for sugar and for me that was really hard to curb. I find drinking a coffee works really well and try to drink lots of water as a good way of making yourself feel full. It’s good for your skin, reduces cellulite, cleanses the body and is good for your brain.

“I lost all my cellulite because I drank loads of water and eliminated sugar and processed foods.

It sounds like a lot of effort, and Claire admits that it’s something you don’t stop thinking about, particularly if you have a family eating different meals to you.

“Take last night. I did my husband chicken in white wine sauce, with mash and then something different for my daughter and then my own meal. I think the key thing is to really enjoy your cooking. I get a box of veg and fruit organic delivered so I’m always eating in season which is great and the variety of things you get keeps it interesting.”

Emotional eating

“You can fall off the wagon for so many different reasons - not feeling well or having a bad time and really feeling the need to comfort yourself by eating nice foods – it’s so easy.

“I think the important thing is to forgive yourself and think that one slip up isn’t going to ruin your aims.”

The ambassador for the Bach Emotional Eating Kit, Claire believes the scents and flavours in the kit are a great back up for when you're struggling. "I find they’re a really good way of normalising and stablising your emotional side and giving yourself that forgiveness.”

US scientists find evidence of ancient Martian lake

A US spacecraft orbiting Mars has provided evidence of an ancient crater lake fed by groundwater, adding further support to theories that the Red Planet may once have hosted life, NASA said Sunday.
Spectrometer data from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) shows traces of carbonate and clay minerals usually formed in the presence of water at the bottom of the 1.4-mile (2.2-kilometer) deep McLaughlin Crater.
"These new observations suggest the formation of the carbonates and clay in a groundwater-fed lake within the closed basin of the crater," NASA said of the findings, which were published in the online edition of Nature Geoscience.
"Some researchers propose the crater interior catching the water," the space agency said, adding that "the underground zone contributing the water could have been wet environments and potential habitats."
The crater lacks large inflow channels, so the lake was likely fed by groundwater, scientists said.
The latest observations "provide the best evidence for carbonate forming within a lake environment instead of being washed into a crater from outside," said Joseph Michalski, lead author of the paper.
The 57-mile-wide crater sits at the low end of a regional slope several hundreds of miles long and, as on Earth, groundwater-fed lakes would be expected to occur at low elevations.
NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has been exploring the planet's surface since its dramatic landing on August 6, collecting rock samples and beaming back rare images in anticipation of an eventual manned mission.
MRO scientist Rich Zurek, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said the latest findings indicate "a more complex Mars than previously appreciated, with at least some areas more likely to reveal signs of ancient life than others." (Source News)

'Strongest evidence yet to there being life on Mars'

Prof John Parnell, 55, has co-written a theory with Dr Joseph Michalski, a planetary geologist at the Natural History Museum, that suggests they have discovered the best signs of life in the huge McLaughlin Crater on the surface of Mars.
The document, published today in Nature Geoscience journal, describes how they assessed the crater, created by a meteorite which smashed into the surface of Mars, flinging up rocks from miles below.
The rocks appear to be made up of clays and minerals which have been altered by water - the essential element to support life.
Speaking from his laboratory at the University of Aberdeen, geochemist Prof Parnell said: "We could be so close to discovering if there is, or was, life on Mars.
"We know from studies that a substantial proportion of all life on Earth is also in the subsurface and by studying the McLaughlin Crater we can see similar conditions beneath the surface of Mars thanks to observations on the rocks brought up by the meteorite strike.
"There can be no life on the surface of Mars because it is bathed in radiation and it's completely frozen. However, life in the sub surface would be protected from that.
"And there is no reason why there isn't bacteria or other microbes that were or still are living in the small cracks well below the surface of Mars.
"One of the other things we have discussed in our paper is that this bacteria could be living off hydrogen, which is exactly the same as what microbes beneath the surface of the Earth are doing too.
"Unfortunately, we won't find any evidence of animals as the most complex life you might get in the sub surface would be fungi.
"But fungi aren't even that far removed from plants and animals, so I think you could say that life on Mars could be complex, but small."
Prof Parnell reckons that although the next mission to Mars will have a drill to examine possibilities of life beneath the surface of Mars, he says his new study suggests looking around the edges of craters would be easier and more beneficial.
He said: "What we're really doing is emphasising that if we are going to explore for life on Mars, we need to go beneath the surface. So we need to find an approach beneath the surface.
"One approach to do that might be to drill and indeed the next European mission to Mars will have a drill on it, but that will only go down about two metres.
"And although drilling two metres on Earth would be a fantastic technological achievement, it's only really scratching the surface.
"So the alternative is to use what nature has done for us and that's why we are are particularly interested in the McLaughlin Crater that we have investigated in our paper.
"Because when a meteor lands, it excavates a big hole in the ground and throws rocks from the bottom of the hole outside the crater to where we could conceivably go and sample them."
And while the craters on Mars may uncover secrets about the planet's possibility of supporting life, Prof Parnell also revealed the results could show us how life on Earth began.
He said: "It's very easy to draw parallels between what Mars looks like and what the early Earth might have looked like, because the rocks on Earth that we see now have been recycled a lot in ways that they have not been recycled on Mars.
"Mars has not had things like erosion and shifting of mountain ranges to destroy vital evidence from the past.
"So studying meteorite craters of Mars may well actually give us an indication to how life on Earth began.
"Although we all live on the surface of Earth, life did not originate here, but actually in the sub surface.
"It was only when life had taken hold below the surface that it gradually expanded and came up to the surface.
"In fact, there's so much life below the surface of our planet that we are actually the unusual ones living above it." (Source News)

Katy Perry brought more than just "Fireworks" to inauguration weekend.
The 28-year-old singer donned a patriotic ensemble as she performed at the Kids' Inauguration Ball on Saturday in Washington, D.C. The racy, curve-hugging one-piece she sported may seem an odd choice for entertaining a few thousand children and their parents, but at least she didn't sport her whipped cream-spewing bra, right?

Perry appeared alongside Usher and the cast of "Glee" at the fete, which was hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden's wife Jill in honor of military families.
The only surprising thing about Perry's appearance at the star-studded weekend in the nation's capital is that she wasn't wearing a more partisan outfit. During the campaign last fall, Perry stumped for the President's re-election wearing Obama-themed looks. She wore a form-fitting white mini dress made to look like a voting ballot checked for the Obama-Biden ticket at a Las Vegas rally, and a rubber frock emblazoned with the campaign slogan "Forward" in Milwaukee.

Picture perfect: Photographer gets amazing shot of THREE dolphins jumping from the waves at once

"It takes lots of guessing and many attempts to be able to catch one leaping clear of the water"
 It's rare enough to see one flying dolphin, but capturing three in a split second makes for an unforgettable photo.

Lucky photographer Grant Atkinson managed to capture this rare sighting of three dolphins emerging out of the water, leaping and seemingly suspended in mid-air.

The professional wildlife photographer captured the moment while the friendly animals played in the surf off the western cape of South Africa.

But he couldn't believe his luck when three dolphins jumped simultaneously out of the water looking as though they're about to take off, especially as capturing leaping dolphins is so difficult to achieve.

Mr Atkinson, from Cape Town, said: "I was on an outing with an ecotourism boat operator out of Simonstown looking for dolphins to take photos of when we saw a group of them.

"At times, the dolphins move very fast, and race along just below the water's surface, breaking clear in graceful leaps every few seconds.

"Some days the dolphins actually approach the boat, and then swim alongside.  In such situations I have to photograph whilst the boat is moving along at the same speed as the dolphins.

"I always find it challenging to capture leaping dolphins. This is mainly because they go under the surface before leaping clear, and I lose sight of them.

"It takes lots of guessing and many attempts to be able to catch one leaping clear of the water, and upwards, before they splash back down into the water."

How to Love Yourself Better in 8 Simple Steps

We all have something about ourselves that's hard reconcile. I am 4'11" and wear size 10 jeans. I wake up with a giant, tangled, afro-like mess on my head. I bite my fingers bloody due to what is likely a psychological disorder. I am almost always loud and sarcastic simultaneously. I was a nerd in high school to whom no boys payed attention (or made fun of my huge boobs, if we're talking about that jerk in middle school) and the girls in my classes hounded for having too many answers. I like to think that as I got older, and especially since I got to college, I have started to be more loving to and accepting of myself. I do believe that if you want to be successful and to be loved, you have to start treating yourself in a more positive manner. I'm hoping that if you take some of this advice to heart, you'll be able to feel a little bit better and smile a little bit more. I'm not saying that I always perfectly heed my own advice, but I try. Sometimes that's all we can do-- and sometimes it works.
1. Develop a Positive Mantra
Whatever it is that you're fighting right now, be it poor body image, a lack of confidence in your work, or relationship problems (and the list goes on, of course), success begins with changing the way you see yourself and your situation. So much of our unhappiness is generated right inside our minds. When we tell ourselves we're not pretty enough, smart enough, talented enough, lovable enough, or whatever the case may be, we hold ourselves back. Take some time every day to look yourself in the eye and say something positive. Tell yourself you are that thing you feel you're not. I'm willing to bet that you're not as bad as you think you are anyway, so none of this "but that would be lying!" crap. Nope. Just say it, and watch yourself start to believe it over time. Also, when I say positive, I mean your mantra should be something like "I am beautiful," not "I am not ugly." Keep those bad words far away.
2. Write Yourself a Love Letter
I've done this several times when I felt I needed it most. Sit down, jot down "Dear Me"/"Dear [Your Name]," and go from there. Tell yourself you love him/her. Apologize for the things you feel you've done wrong. Make promises that you truly feel you can keep. Tell yourself how much you appreciate the positive things that s/he does for you on a daily basis. Write whatever you want, however you want, but just be sure to keep it clear that this a love letter. Don't be spiteful or negative, because you don't deserve that. None of it. And be as honest as you can-- after all, no one has to see it if you don't want them to. If you want, as a separate exercise, write a letter containing all the terrible things you have done/said to yourself (and we all have some for sure) and burn it. Purge yourself of these nasty things and start over. You deserve that clean slate.
3. Do What Makes You Feel Good
I encourage you all to take a little more time to think of things you can do to make yourself feel great and lovely. If you love rock music, take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to sit back with some ear buds and bang your head. If working out makes you feel better about yourself, go to the gym, walk the dog, or slip in a workout DVD when you get a break from work or school. Maybe you love bright red, manicured nails-- make an appointment for a manicure on your day off, or grab some polish and relive the joy of childhood slumber parties with some girl friends if a professional is strictly forbidden by your budget. In other words, take care of and pamper yourself. Life can be hard and stressful, and being relaxed and taking the time to focus on your own needs is incredibly rewarding. 4. Eat the Butterfinger!
Following up on the previous note, let yourself enjoy indulgences. Life is short. There is no rule that says you are a better person if you choose the carrot stick when you really, really want the candy bar. (Side Note: according to my boyfriend, the two of the least attractive traits in a women are too much makeup and an unwillingness to eat non-diet food).
5. Take Stock of Your Relationships, and Prune the Bad Ones
Most of us have a lot of complex relationships in our lives. We have family, significant others, coworkers, teachers, the person who always hands us our prescription at CVS, etc. Some of these relationships are great, but some of them can be toxic. When I refer to a toxic relationship, I'm referring to someone with whom you can't get along or is just no damn good for you-- they make you feel bad about yourself and put you in the worst mood on a regular basis. Get these people out of your life. Do not waste your time with people who are preventing you from living up to your potential or are just causing you misery in general. I say this from the point of view of a woman who, for a couple of years, chased a man who absolutely did not love me. I was so in love with him at the time-- and so unsure that I'd ever find a man who would want to be around me again-- that I allowed myself to waste a lot of time, feelings, money, and sexual favors in hopes that all that "devotion" would turn him around. People like this are no good for you. I don't talk to him anymore (and of course, once I got into a good relationship, he said he'd "changed" and wanted me to be his girlfriend again). Please, ladies and gents, take a good hard look at the people you surround yourself with. Drop Debbie Downer from your speed dial and start hanging out with some more positive people. Break up with the dead beat boyfriend or girlfriend. Try to find a job where you're not walked all over. I believe that this policy can apply to parents-- you were born to them, but that doesn't mean you can't have a toxic relationship with them. Sometimes for everyone's sanity, you have to minimize contact.
6. Take the Compliment!
If someone compliments you, they mean it. I am not going to tell you you're pretty if I don't think you are-- and even if I really don't, what does it matter? It's a nice thing to say. Compliments are meant to make you feel good, and it's terribly aggravating and unattractive to reply to "wow, you look great!" with "no, I don't, I look fat." It's insulting to whoever you're saying it to, and it's certainly not going to make you feel any better about yourself. Say "thanks," and try to take the nice words as truth. You'll drop the skepticism after awhile and feel a million times better when you can unabashedly beam with pride.
7. Minimize Judgmentalness
We all make judgments. We're human, after all. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to stop the catty internal dialogue that a lot of us have going on sometimes. Play the Compliment Game, and for every person you see, try to think of one kind comment to make about them (and even say them to that person if you want to add some extra challenge). You'll feel better without the chip on your shoulder (that chip almost always stems from insecurity), and it just feels plain old nice to be nice.
8. Make a List of Healthy Goals and Make Them Happen
What do you want to achieve? What is realistic and beneficial to try to achieve? How are you going to achieve these things? I find it really comforting to have a list in front of me. If it's not your thing, fair enough, but still give some thought to how you're going to do what you want to do with your life. If your life dream is to be a math teacher, but you didn't go to college... well, you'd better go get that college degree. People tend to sit around languishing over the things they haven't done with their lives, wish they were doing in their lives, but it's all just an eternal pity party if you're not going to try to get what you want. If your happiness hinges on getting out of the office and into the circus, find out what you have to do to join the circus and do it, for goodness sake! Part of our mental health and satisfaction is how well we feel we've actualized our potential. Even taking little wee baby steps toward it will do you a world of good. Still, remember that you shouldn't quit your dayjob to become a singer-songwriter if you can't carry a tune. Dreams are great to follow, but the real world isn't always so kind, so you need to keep a realistic outlook on life.

Restaurant Run by Robots Becomes Internationally Renowned


Almost everyone can remember a time when they received bad service at a restaurant. Usually, human error plays a major role in the experience. But what would happen if humans were taken out of the equation? How about making the entire situation a bit more robotic? Well, look no further -- a restaurant known for its service and its food is run almost entirely by a staff of robots.
Robot Restaurant, located in the Heilongjiang province in China, has been open since last June, and it has been successful. When patrons enter, a robot greets them by extending its mechanical arm and saying, "Earth person, hello. Welcome to the Robot Restaurant." However, welcoming guests to the restaurant is not all the robots do. Robots wait the tables, cook the noodles, and even entertain the patrons by singing to them. As meals are prepared, they are brought out on a conveyor belt, and the waiterbots take it from there.
The restaurant has gained international fame and has become increasingly popular since its debut. The owners say they invested about $800,000 in total, with each robot costing around $40,000.
So other than dining in the restaurant, where else do humans come into play? A staff of human technicians work in the back to maintain the robots and keep them charged.
As good as the food and service may be, there is still one thing that the robots will never be able to do: make the food with love. That just cannot be programmed.

Raw Kale Recipes - 3 Easy Recipes!

Raw kale is one of the most nutritious greens you can eat. Here are three easy raw kale recipes you can try at home.
It is one of the healthiest greens for your bones because it contains vitamin K, manganese, which promotes bone density, and it also contains calcium.
It is also the top leafy green source of the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which promote eye health. It also contains vitamins C, B6, and B2 and is a good source of fiber.
There are many varieties including Curly, Red Winter, and Lacinto. You might also be lucky enough to find an heirloom variety at your local farmer's market as well. Experiment with different types for different tastes and textures.
Here are three easy raw kale recipes that I hope will get you to try this very nutritious vegetable.
Warning: kale is contraindicated in people taking anti-coagulants such as Warfarin.
Tropical Smoothie
1 cup pineapple
1 cup mango
1 banana
6 Lacinto or Dinosaur Kale leaves
2 cups water
Blend all ingredients in a powerful blender such as the Vitamix until completely smooth and creamy. Add honey, agave nectar, stevia or another sweetener if desired. Enjoy as a super healthy addition to your breakfast routine or as nutritious snack during the day.
Green Juice
5 ribs celery
1 large English cucumber
2-3 large Fuji apples
1/2 lime
6 Curly Kale leaves
Put all the ingredients through a juicer. My favorite juicer because of it's versatility is the Omega Vert 350. If you don't have a juicer an alternative would be to chop the cucumber, apple, and celery and place it in a blender (cucumber first) with the chopped kale and peeled lime. Blend on high for about thirty seconds and then pour and squeeze the mixture through a sprout bag over a big bowl. Sprout bags are relatively inexpensive and have a variety of uses. The sprout bag will strain out all the pulp and leave you with a smooth and silky juice. Pour the juice back into the blender carafe and then pour into a glass.
Raw Marinated Asian Salad
1 large bunch Lacinto or Dinosaur kale thinly sliced
(or another type of kale)
Juice from 1 lime (about 6 tablespoons)
1 tablespoon raw sesame seed oil
1 tablespoon cold pressed olive oil
2 tablespoons chickpea miso
1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
2 tablespoons finely chopped green onion
(about 2 green onions green part only)
1 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
(about 1/2 large bell pepper)
handful of your favorite seaweed
[torn dulse, silky sea palm, kombu, wakame... (etc.)]
1 tablespoon black or white sesame seeds (optional)
Make sure the greens are thinly sliced, you can even shred the kale with your food processor with the slicing disk on if you wish. Put the shredded kale in a large bowl and mash in with a fork the oil, chickpea miso, shredded ginger, and lime juice. Make sure the miso and oil is well blended. You can even massage the kale with your hands to make sure the kale is well coated. Serve now or let the kale marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hr., it can even sit overnight. The longer it marinates the more tender the kale will be. When you are ready to serve, add in the bell pepper, seaweed, cucumber, green onion, and sesame seeds.
